Pond Dipping with Children: Top Tips
Taking your kid’s pond dipping is a great way to teach them about nature and the environment. It is the perfect activity to get them away from screens and out into the fresh air to have some fun. However, keeping your kids safe around the water and making sure they understand how to behave properly in nature is important, so if you are planning to take your kids out on an educational trip to the local pond, here are some tips to help you manage it.
Make Sure the Pond is Clean
If you are lucky enough to have a garden with a good-sized pond at home, you can do this activity with your kids without having to leave your property. Just make sure that your pond is clean and safe for your kids to be around. A good quality filter pump like the Aquamax 4000 should give you peace of mind. If you are going to take them to your local park or nature reserve, do some research beforehand to see if a) you are allowed to do this activity will your children there and b) the water is not contaminated with nasty bacteria or other harmful things.
Get the Right Equipment
To make sure your kids are pond dipping properly, you will need to get them the right equipment. A pond net and tray to fill with water is a must, and even add items like a magnifying glass could be useful for them to observe smaller fish and creatures up close. You could also create a booklet for them to use as a reference, or ask them questions about what animals they are looking at and getting them to draw diagrams, etc.
Tell Them to Be Gentle
Your kids must understand they are handling living creatures and that they need to respect them. Show them how to gently handle the animals and minimize the physical contact they have with them as not to distress the animal they are observing. They should also be careful about how they behave in the water, so they are not disturbing the natural habitat of these animals too much.
Don’t Go Too Far into the Water
Even if there are shallow areas the kids can wade into, it is important to make sure they do not stray too far. Often there are sudden dips where the water gets very deep, and your kids might become submerged or panic if they lose their footing. Set a boundary as to how far they can go into the water to catch things in their pond nets.
Make Sure They Stay in Sight
If you are going pond dipping in a park or nature reserve, you should also set boundaries to how far your kids can go exploring. It is easy for them to get carried away and curious about their surroundings, but make it clear they must stay in your sights. Set boundaries such as they cannot go beyond a line of trees, a rubbish bin, bench, or whatever is within a reasonable distance of where you are pond dipping together.
This is a great activity to do as a family and a wonderful opportunity for your kids to learn. Just make sure you are following these top tips to keep them safe while they are having fun.
