Family Fun at the Eye Doctor? It’s Actually Possible!
Nick and I both wear glasses and I’m definitely worried about my kids developing myopia (short-sightedness). Do you know that Singapore has one of the highest myopia rates in the world? *cringe* And with devices and screens around every corner these days, myopia is only becoming a bigger problem.
How Videre Made Eye Health and Myopia Prevention Fun for My Kids
I brought my daughters Lauren and Georgia with me to check out Videre and certainly wasn’t disappointed!
We all know that eye health is important, but can an eye exam (especially with kids in tow) actually be fun? I didn’t think so until my recent visit to Videre. My family is in need of a more holistic eye care and Videre seemed like just the place. I heard that Videre is the leading expert in vision care for personalized comprehensive eye checks and myopia management and prevention, so I definitely wanted to give it a shot.
Regular eye exams are so important to keep your children’s vision perfect and healthy. That’s part of why we wanted to try the Videre store – to ensure our girls get to keep the gift of great vision.
The ACUVUE Experience Zone
The experts at Videre brought us to the ACUVUE Experience Zone inside the store so my girls could experience what it would be like to have myopia and astigmatism. This is also the world’s first truly immersive ACUVUE experience, with multi-media installation and touch screen features so that we can all learn about eye health and contact lenses! I mean how else can you explain to children about blur vision and astigmatism?
Lauren and Georgia also learned about how to take good care of their eyes through the interactive sporting arena featuring our national athletes that simulates the challenge of playing sports while one has impaired vision. It makes my momma heart so happy to see my girls taking ownership of their own eye health, and Lauren even managed to score full marks on the eye health quiz! Videre really empowered them to understand what screens really do to their eyes and some tips to keep them healthy. The experience zone makes it easier for my kids to tell me if they do develop myopia and astigmatism early.
On top of the education and tips, the Experience Zone was just FUN for the girls. They played the interactive games again and again while I got my own eyes checked and never once complained that they have to wait for me. Win-win!
The I-Gen Eye Health Check
We should all be getting our kiddos comprehensive health checks, but what I like about the eye exam at Videre is the state of the art equipment they use to detect problems early. Our previous eye care provider would do comprehensive exams, but I always wondered if something was being overlooked. Not so at Videre!
My girls started their comprehensive eye exam at Videre with the color deficiency test which is a simple quiz so that they will be more comfortable and prepared for the upcoming tests. This was followed by the eye teaming and lazy eye screening to help determine their eye health and if there is anything which parents should take note of about their habits. Their session was concluded with a myopia eye test that had not just numbers and alphabets, but also pictures so that they don’t make wild guesses on what they actually see.
For my children, their current vision is perfect, well, as perfect as one should be. So myopia management is the most important thing. for us right now because we do use screens in our home and even at school. I don’t want their vision to be compromised because of technology. Now I feel empowered to prevent myopia and other vision problems. It is also recommended to take your child for eye-checks once a year!
It’s Not Just for Kids
While I love everything Videre had for my daughters, I was really thrilled that the focus on adult eye care is just as good.
I’ve worn glasses since I was ten years old and have been a contact lens wearer for the past 23 years. My first pair of contact lenses were actually from ACUVUE, but they were permanent soft lenses that lasted for years (remember those??). So glad for dailies contacts now.
During my visit, I learned more about adult vision than I’ve ever been at any other eye care provider. Yee Leen, the optometrist at Videre, walked me through each of the test and the importance of detecting conjunctivitis and glaucoma symptoms early.
I’m in front of the screen a LOT working on my blog, books, and more so maintaining eye health and avoiding digital eye fatigue is extremely important to me.
To reduce eyestrain from digital devices, Yee Leen’s advice is to follow the 20-20-20 rule – every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
While the readings of my eye health seem normal and my vision hasn’t deteriorated since my last eye check, Yee Leen found some abnormality on my right eye cornea.
Can you see it? That spotty white flecks show that I may have scratched my cornea unintentionally and that I should stay off from wearing contact lenses for a week. I never would have found out if I hadn’t gone for the eye inspection. For that, she prescribed eye drops for me so that my eyes will be kept moist to minimize irritation.
My Contact Lens Fitting Experience
When I do start wearing lenses again, the optometrist recommended switching from ACUVUE Moist Dailies to ACUVUE OASYS 1-Day because of the higher oxygen content in the lenses, which is really important because of my digital habits. My eyes just need to breathe!
I even had a contact lens fitting at the store to experience how the new contacts feel on my eyes. I was really impressed at how my ACUVUE lenses helped to enhance comfort while also ensuring that my vision is sharp and stable all day! I also love the dedicated, open and clean space for customers to try on lenses and get educated on wearing contact lenses.
