‘Mom’ Is Not My Entire Existence
What is motherhood like for you?
Society expects motherhood to be all-consuming; a mother forgets herself and puts her children above all else. I don’t see being a mother as my whole existence. Instead of seeing motherhood as a sacrifice and a hindrance to my goals, I see motherhood as a responsibility that I take on and it drives me to become a better person.
How would you describe your parenting style?
We have a list of our family values printed out and hung on our living room wall. It serves a reminder for myself and my husband to practice those values and model it to our children. So I think my parenting style is relaxed with some boundaries. I model good habits and behaviour, let the children make their own choices and mistakes without judgement, love them unconditionally and parent when it’s necessary.
What are some things that you hope your kids will learn from you?
I hope my kids will grow up to have a practical yet optimistic view of life, be comfortable in their own skin and not afraid to live life on their own terms.
