It has been a busy week – consulting client, attending business workshops and researching content for my book. So I dug through my draft folder (many half written posts sitting in there) and found this post written earlier in January this year. I didn’t have a category to file this, so I just left it unpublished. But today I have a genius idea to start a brand new tag/label/category called ‘Anecdotes’. Okay, maybe not thaaat much of a genius idea but it really depend if you are the supportive type. If you are, you would agree… So where was I? Oh yeah.. this happened.
Nick and I just got ‘schooled’ by Lauren. She was doing her ‘Sophia The First’ jigsaw puzzle and Nick sat by her side helping and cheering her along.
I wasn’t initially involved, I was enjoying my time, you know, scrolling down Instagram. But half way through it, she came and invited me to sit down on the floor with them. Bless that child, she is ever so inclusive.
You know how long it sometimes takes for a 2 year old to put find and put two pieces of jigsaw puzzles together? Maybe about 20 seconds or so (ok, that sounded really quick) but it felt like forever at the time. The thing is, we want to let her complete it by herself and gain self confidence. We are there to just guide her along.
“Maybe it’s the other piece? Try turning it around? What about over here?”. In fact, she is getting better. It took her about 25 minutes to complete a 96 piece puzzle. Well now I’m totally boasting.
Anyway, back to being schooled. So she was taking ‘awhile’. Nick and I went from stealing glances at our phones to full on surfing.
Until Lauren said, “Put it down!”. At both of us. Looking slightly indignant.
Whoops! Let me tell ya. That was the end of it. She had our full attention until she completed the whole jigsaw puzzle.
So the moral of the story is? I really don’t have one. It is pretty obvious that we should put the phone down when we are with the kids. They deserve our full attention. If only I can keep my phone away. Wish me luck.
