What To Do When You Are Pregnant
A friend has very recently discovered that she’s pregnant. Although she and her husband have been trying to have a baby for some time now, she doesn’t quite know what to do now that she has finally conceived.
So besides shopping (which was the first thing that came to me when I got pregnant), what else? Well, turns out there are plenty to do and think about.
Here goes:
- Choose an ob-gyn. Consider location, personality match and waiting time.
- Research what to eat or what to avoid during pregnancy
- Hire a maternity concierge, if you have absolutely no idea on the whole pregnancy thing
- Book ante-natal classes if it is your first pregnancy or need a refresher course
- Decide where to give birth (home or hospital)
- Think about birthing partners (doesn’t have to be your husband if he is annoying)
- Hospital tours
- Decide which stroller & car seat to buy
- Look for and confirm help – either hire confinement lady, or mother or in-laws would help
- Find out about local breast feeding support services and put numbers in your phone
- Read up on C-section even if you have decided on natural birth – just so you are prepared for emergency
- Get maternity bra, tops, nursing pads, breast pumps – you’ll be nursing most of the time
- Sort out your life insurance
- Get an insurance policy for baby
- Join an online expecting mothers group (Trust me. you will feel a LOT better when you hear others have also gained 15kg so far)
- Check your maternity leave rights
- Join mummysg.com forum – connect with other mommies and there are lots of good value 2nd hand baby things for sale too
- Decide what cot, crib etc to buy
- Write a birthing plan
- Stock up your pantry – for hunger pangs in the middle of the night
- Stock up your freezer – easy frozen meals when you are too tired to cook
- Spend time reading, listening to music, anything that puts you in a good mood
- Mini dates with husband
- Pack your hospital bag
- SLEEP!
